Technology Strategy
In 2003 Nicholas Carr published a controversial and bold assertion about Information Technology in organizations: IT was becoming a commodity, and, like similar innovative technology in past centuries, as the ubiquity of IT would increase, the costs and its relative strategic value would decrease.
Carr’s article polarized many experts in the field of IT, partly fuelled by Carr’s (2003) choice of words (“IT doesn’t matter”) as well as by the comparison he made between ubiquitous technologies like electricity, telephones, railroads and IT.
